Installing Reshade Client
Take these steps to get your Reshade Client up and running:
- Download the installer from our site
- Run it and follow the screen instructions
- When the installation is complete you will be prompted to run the application
- To run it a later time, a shorcut is placed in your Start Menu/All Programs
The user interface
The following will consider that the application has been licensed. If you have purchased a license see how to register. The application window is described below:
Short description of the interface features
- The Reshade logo: go to product description page on reshade.com
- Open button: open an image
- Save button: save the resized image to disk
- Zoom: use slider to adjust the zoom level of your image; enter a value directly into the zoom box
- New size: enter the desired width/height of the enlarged image
- Control: The degree at which the image is transformed. Higher values create sharper and more clear edges but with more distortion. A close to optimal value is approximated by "auto adjust". When it is enabled the required value for control is selected automatically, otherwise the slider will be available for the user to choose a value himself.
- Quality: select higher quality resizes vs faster processing
- Best Edges:
- when enabled
- no local color shifts caused by extreme settings are visible even at large zooms
- more precise edge detection takes place
- when disabled the resizing takes place faster
- Best Edges:
- Smooth: remove image defects like noise and some compression artifacts
- Texture: sharpen the resized image
- Accuracy: get smoother (low values) versus more precise approximations of the original image (high accuracy)
- Threshold: how smooth the edges should be to start transforming them (a value of 0 transforms everything)
- Get quick information here on the various controls when hovering the mouse over them
- Advanced:
- Soft edges: toggles between the two versions of the Reshade algorithm.
- Soft edges: toggles between the two versions of the Reshade algorithm.
- Preview the reshaded image
- Original image overview (reduced to fit)
- Select which part of the original image to preview on the left pane after resizing it (this will not crop the image)
- Adjust the percentage of the window used by the preview image and the overview.
- See quick tips on the controls and status information
- The opened image location on disk
- File and help menu-bar
The menu bar

File menu
- The open and save options will function the same as their corresponding buttons.
- Save options: when not checked the default values for the sliders will be loaded for each new image opened; when checked the settings will be saved from picture to picture and in different resizing sessions.

Registering
When opening Reshade for the first time you will be prompted to enter your registration information:

If you do not have a license you can purchase one here. After you have your license information enter in into the corresponding fields and press Register. If you'd just like to try out the application you can do so by clicking on Later. Remember, the unregistered version will allow you to test every feature in the full version but when saving the image it will put a watermark on it.
Getting started
- Open an image
- Click on the open button
- Drag and drop files (from explorer or directly from your browser)
- Use keyboard shortcut: Ctrl-O
- Adjust the settings as you like
- Work with the sliders. For fine control use up/down arrows when the slider is selected.
- Enter values in the corresponding text-fields. You can use decimals for the zoom value.
- Save the resized image
- Click on the save button
- Use keyboard shortcut: Ctrl-S
Need to know
Saved images may appear not to be zoomed
If this happens try opening the image at actual pixels/full size/100% zoom in your favourite image viewer. These programs try to fit the image to your screen by default, thus shrinking it. An enlarged image using the default settings is almost identical to the original when down-sized again.
Default compression is 95% on JPEGS
When saving in the JPEG format Reshade uses 95% compression. Please use BMP if you need a lossless format.
Full image is saved
The rectangle on the right image pane represents the selected preview that will be displayed on the left. Reshade doesn't crop images. When saving, the full resized image is stored to disk. If you want to crop the image do this before resizing it with Reshade in your favorite image editor.
Quick preview
Clicking and holding the left mouse button on any of the image panes will show a fast preview of the zoomed image (using the simplest resizing method available). This is NOT what the saved image will look like. The reshaded version will be shown after releasing the mouse button.
Longer delays
With some settings there will be a significant delay in processing the image so the preview will not be refreshed instantly. A progress bar will be displayed at the buttom of the screen.
The time needed to save an image is greatly dependent on the settings used. The most time consuming options are zoom and edge control. The greater the values for these the longer it will take. Also, selecting “Best Edges" will double the processing requirements.
More information on specific settings
Edge control
What mostly influences the resulting image is the “Edge Control” setting. This affects sharpness and blur-reduction. Extremely large values can create distortions (required for edge clarity). The best value for “Edge control” is generally close to the “Auto” setting. But, for better results try switching off auto, and increasing the edge control gradually starting from 0 until you are satisfied.
| edge control 0 |
edge control 60 |
edge control 100 |
- Zoom: 20
- Edge threshold: 4
- Accuracy: 90
- Best edges: Enabled
- Soft edges: Enabled
- Other options are set to 0 or disabled respectively
Accuracy
The accuracy setting influences how similar the resized image is to the original. Lower values will allow Reshade to create smoother curves at the cost of precision. At large zoom values, generally it’s better to use smaller accuracy. This creates realistic transformations with little loss of precision.
edge control 0 |
accuracy 100 |
accuracy 75 |
- Zoom: 20
- Edge threshold: 10
- Edge control: Auto (for middle and right image)
- Best edges: Enabled
- Soft edges: Enabled
- Other options are set to 0 or disabled respectively
Smoothing
When smoothing the image although defects will be removed there will also be a small decrease in sharpness on some images. Use higher values for texture to compensate.
edge control 0 |

smooth 100 |
- Zoom: 20
- Edge threshold: 20
- Accuracy: 90
- Edge control: Auto (for middle and right image)
- Best edges: Enabled
- Soft edges: Enabled
- Other options are set to 0 or disabled respectively
Edge threshold
Sometimes gradients in the image become less smooth. Try increasing “Edge threshold” to remove this kind of problems. Large values will keep the soft edges as they are and only sharpen the strong ones.

edge threshold 3 |
edge threshold 0 |
- Zoom: 20
