Improved: Quick Zoom Feature for the Image Gallery Thumbnails

Filed under: Online reshade, Reshade development — admin @ 6:07 pm

An update has been made to the quick thumbnail zoom algorithm. When you hover your mouse over the images in the gallery a part of the underlying image is zoomed and shown in place of the original thumbnail. The part of the image with the best focus is selected.

In the new version of the algorithm the selection is made dependent not just on the greatest detail regions of the image but also on highest color contrast. Most importantly, the selection contains most probably a whole object (if there is one in the image that can be cropped at this zoom).

The most noticeable improvements can be seen on high quality pictures. The top voted pictures from the online image gallery are good examples of this. Because low quality images taken with cell-phones or having poor focus or other defects don’t usually have so many localized details, the quick zoom selection will not be representative in this case.

What the above implies is a method to find good quality images.  Usually these have great looking thumbnails but also a well chosen quick zoom.

The quick zoom is also available in the related images section on the right of each tagged image.

Reshade Site-Membership: Use the Online Image Resizer Directly From Your Site (Beta)

Filed under: Online reshade, Reshade development — subpic @ 3:34 pm

Resize images directly from your own site with reshade.com. Place a resizeit sticker to quickly and easily allow your visitors to use the free online image resizer from our site.

Never worry about the size of the wallpapers on your site. Be assured that as long as the size of the original image is within decent limits (3x zoom) you will have all the standard wallpaper resolutions in a snap. Just add a link to the reshade resize page with the URL of the image you want resized and we do all the rest.

Resize your images from 1024×768 to 1600×1200 with no quality loss. This includes maintaining sharpness, focus, the original softness and all the necessary details that make for a great wallpaper. Get the most accurate resizing technology available today at this zoom range for free.

You can make a direct link from your site to the reshade resize-image page.

http://reshade.com/online-image-resizer/add-image?private=<private status>&urlfromsite=<your image url>

How it works

You will place links on your site like the ones below:

1. use an image link

2. or text link
resize it

The first time someone clicks on the link, reshade.com will get the image from your site and cache it on our servers. This will happen only once. All future clicks will just display the reshade resize-image page for your image. Here anyone can resize, crop and enhance your image.

As an added bonus you have the possibility to display your images in our public gallery. This feature is optional, you can keep your images private and only accessible from your own site if you like. All images have a link back to your home page.

How to get started

Start resizing your images from your own site in 3 easy steps:

  • create a user account on reshade.com and set your home page correctly
  • send us a notice stating that you would like to activate your site-level membership. Please include the user name you want to activate or the corresponding email address.
  • after we activate your account you will receive a confirmation email and you’re ready to use the site-level membership

Every image you add to reshade.com this way appears in your “my pictures” collection when logged in.

The code

How it looks

How it’s done
Place the following text under your images and change the URL to point to your own images:

<a href=”http://reshade.com” onclick=”location.href=’http://reshade.com/online-image-resizer/add-image?private=yes&urlfromsite=’ + encodeURIComponent(’http://reshade.com/picture/medium/50161277.jpg‘); return false;”>
<img src=”http://reshade.com/static/images/resizeit.gif” />
</a>

Your image URL is added to after the “urlfromsite=” parameter (bold text). If you do not specify a value for the private parameter or enter a value of “no” the image will be added to the reshade public gallery. Otherwise it will be kept private and only accessible directly through the link on your site. You can use anything else in place of the <img [..]> (the part in italics). You can even use the image thumbnail to link to the corresponding reshade resize image page.

See reshade site membership in action here: subpic.com or go directly to this page showing a quick example of image resizing.

Site updates (since the last post)

Filed under: Online reshade, Reshade development — subpic @ 4:31 pm

Latest changes to the online application:

Gallery

  • image size and number of votes are always visible: on some systems there was a lag when scrolling the window because of the javascript events
  • larger perspective on thumbnail auto-zoom: crops are made from the 600×600 px medium sized image

Image resize page

  • changed placement for gallery types (my / hot / new / top)
  • options that require login are more clearly highlighted
  • images have been split into three types:
    • those below 800×600px
      • higher zooms (up to 6x) are allowed
      • have a better quality when resized
    • those with more than 4 up votes
      • better quality
      • because sharpening or smoothing are resource intensive it is disabled
    • the rest
  • collections can be modified by anyone now
  • changed placement of image title and author
  • related pictures from the same author are displayed below each image when available
  • more detailed “how to use” section
  • delete/undelete image without opening a new page
  • new smoothing method (smooth 1x) that removes artifacts better
    • it still has a minor problem on some images, a visible halo around the edges, but this will get fixed
    • display current zoom level for each image/crop selection
    • fixed bug with the crop tool: it displayed weird vertical lines
    • fixed bug with sharpening: it is stronger for very low zoom levels

    Add new image page

    • option to set the image public/private automatically after uploading
    • do not allow re-posting images that are already on reshade.com
    • some jpeg files are not displayed correctly in some browsers so a conversion to friendlier formats is done now

There may be other changes that I did not mention here. If you have any suggestions, please take a minute to comment.
